چکیده

Spatial neglect refers to the defective ability of patients to identify and respond to stimuli presented in the contralesional hemifield, following unilateral brain injury (mainly right hemisphere damage). Spatial neglect can occur in specific sectors of space regarding a given coordinate system. Neurophysiological and neuroimaging data underline the role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in visualspatial functions. Healthy subjects show a tendency to overestimate left side of visual field. This phenomenon, known as pseudoneglect, happens mainly in peripersonal (hand reaching) space than in extrapersonal one. These findings highlight that separate neural circuits underline spatial cognition, and that these ones work synergically to elaborate information. Recent studies conducted by using non-invasive transcranial stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), strengthened this hypothesis and also suggested that these stimulation techniques may be a useful therapeutic tool in patients with brain damage and visuo-spatial deficits.

Sound lateralisation in patients with left or right cerebral hemispheric lesions: relation with unilateral visuospatial neglect.

OBJECTIVES To localise the brain lesion that causes disturbances of sound lateralisation and to examine the correlation between such deficit and unilateral visuospatial neglect. METHOD There were 29 patients with right brain damage, 15 patients with left brain damage, and 22 healthy controls, who had normal auditory and binaural thresholds. A device was used that delivered sound to the left a...

Different Profiles of Verbal and Nonverbal Auditory Impairment in Cortical and Subcortical Lesions

A B S T R A C T Introduction:We investigated differential role of cortical and subcortical regions in verbal and non-verbal sound processing in ten patients who were native speakers of Persian with unilateral cortical and/or unilateral and bilateral subcortical lesions and 40 normal speakers as control subjects. Methods: The verbal tasks included monosyllabic, disyllabic dichotic and diotic tas...

Sexual Dimorphism in Surface Anatomical Parameters of Parahippocampal Cortex in Normal Subjects and Those Suffering From Alzheimer and Parkinson's Diseases - a Stereologic and Macroscopic Study

Purpose: This study was designed to determine sex differences in the surface anatomical parameters (surface area and thickness) of the left parahippocampal cortex in healthy right - handed subjects and right - handed subjects suffering from Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 males, 34 fem...

Enhancement of Visuospatial Working Memory by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Prefrontal and Parietal Cortices

Objective: Previous studies have reported dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and posterior parietal (PPC) activation during the performance of spatial working memory (SWM), so we decided to investigate the comparison of Transcranial Direct current stimulation (tDCS) effect between these two areas. Methods: Fifty-four healthy right-handed students (27 female, 27 male; age= 24.3±.2 years) w...

Lateralization of Cognitive Functions in Aphasia after Right Brain Damage

PURPOSE The lateralization of cognitive functions in crossed aphasia in dextrals (CAD) has been explored and compared mainly with cases of aphasia with left hemisphere damage. However, comparing the neuropsychological aspects of CAD and aphasia after right brain damage in left-handers (ARL) could potentially provide more insights into the effect of a shift in the laterality of handedness or lan...
